Start your first coin collection, the right way
A guided, no-pressure way for adults to start a first coin collection, or to give a first coin as a gift, with the right holder, a simple plan and the basics.
Every collection starts with one coin. The First Coin Starter Program helps you pick a good first piece, keep it safe, and know what to do next, without hype and without pressure.
Who it's for
- Adults starting their own first collection
- Parents and grandparents who want to give a first coin as a gift and start a family tradition. We work with you, the adult. We don't create accounts for or collect information from children.
What's included
- A simple starting plan. Pick a theme you'll enjoy, using College 101: Collecting with a Goal. The American Silver Eagle is a popular place to start because there's one every year since 1986.
- The basics, in plain English. Coins 101 and Grading Decoded: mint marks, proof vs. business strike, and how to verify a cert yourself.
- Safe storage from day one. The right holder and handling habits, and why you should never clean a coin. Starter storage supplies are coming to our Supplies page.
- Your Collector Portal. Add your first coin with photos and start a set tracker Coming soon, so you can see what comes next.
- A person to ask. Adults who want to keep learning can request a volunteer mentor through Choice Mentors.
Giving a first coin as a gift
A first coin makes a thoughtful gift for a birthday, a graduation, or a new baby's birth year. A few tips for the adult giving it:
- Choose a coin with a personal connection, like a birth year.
- Give it in a proper holder so it stays protected.
- Include a short note about why you chose it.
- Keep the receipt and a photo in your own portal records.
