107: Care, Storage & Records
Handling, holders and humidity; photographing and cataloging; plus the insurance, privacy and storm-prep lessons collectors wish they'd read sooner.
This course follows the Choice Collection Management Protocol: catalog it, photograph it, store it right, keep records your insurer and family can use, and review once a year.
Lesson 107.1: Handling, holders and humidity
- Handle by the edges. For silver, use cotton gloves rather than latex, "because the sulphur in latex causes silver to tarnish" (CCI).
- Skip PVC flips for long-term storage. NGC says PVC is fine only for "less than six months," after which it can lead to "hydrochloric acid which permanently scars the coin" (NGC).
- Keep humidity low. For coins, the Canadian Conservation Institute says "Ideally, the RH should be below 30%," while "35–55% are the norm" for mixed collections. If corrosion starts, a silica-gel microclimate can help (CCI). Many collectors use indicator desiccant so they can see when it needs replacing (Collectors Universe forum).
- Avoid wooden boxes and cabinets, especially oak. Wood "can emit acidic vapours… Oak cabinets in particular should be avoided" (CCI).
- Keep things out of light and heat, and away from floors, attics and anywhere that floods.
Lesson 107.2: Photographing and cataloging
Everything else depends on a written inventory with photos: insurance claims, theft recovery, records for your tax pro, your heirs, and a fair sale. PCGS suggests keeping "a good high-resolution image of the front and back of your coin" (PCGS). Use our photo guide: front, back, label, edges, no flash glare. Record purchase price, date and seller in the private fields, and keep receipts.
